4. EPQ Project

EPQ The Enhanced Protoquadro (EPQ) is a joint development project between Philips Research and Sub Multimedia Re_Search Lab that aims to develop a new generation of protoquadro digital artworks together with the technology to support them.

Enhanced digital paintings will respond in a natural manner to the presence of nearby viewers. Intelligent behaviors will create an organic feeling of movement and transformation that will stimulate a spontaneous and playful interaction; complex data processes will appear as aesthetically interesting change of state.

The EPQ is independent from display resolution, uses clustering strategies to fit surfaces of any dimension and shape and is made to be expandable and versatile.

This research aims to improve the painting’s appearance with technical and artistic solutions that will transform the touch and feel of the display, into a harmonious mixture of color and light integrated to an environment.

After 1.5 years of development and hard work Rob Fischer managed to re-engineer completely the protoquadro rendering platform, from the original in Macromedia Director to a original rendering engine developed and maintained in C++ on a multi-platform base on OS X, Windows and LINUX

The new platform has some key characteristics:

  1. Scalability: the painting is composed by a cluster of clients that are instructed by a central server on when to update the part of the painting they have to render. This leads to multiple screen, multiple beamer scene animation.
  2. Speed: Use of GPU accelleration (via Open GL)
  3. Is build on Open Libraries
  4. Integrates a scripting language (LUA) for rapid prototyping
