And in this occasion the ICE series Triptych called “B” will be shown in the premises, introduced by a first outing on www.philips.com web site. In the site you can also d/l an interview with Federico Bonelli.
Still available a nice introduction to Protoquadro project as published on Password Magazine n.33 .PDF.

Is for us a nice thing moreover because we expect more people to be able to see our work and enjoy it.

Is the occasion to thanks all minds and harts behind the project “protoquadro”, in particular Amy Jackson, the brilliant artist that inspired with her gorgeous pictures the first protoquadro “Unlikely Canvases” in 2003.

Federico will be in Berlin to answer questions, get in touch via mail directly or via Philips own communication at IFA if you like to meet him.

Opens today up in Eindhoven CRE 2009, the annual internal showcase for Philips Research.

As happened before CRE is a platform to show some new work of the protoquadro kind for SUb multimedia re_search lab members. This year a preview of a new work is exposed on the walls of the Hospitality Center: SPQICE-Triptych-B.

Hanging in the Experience Lab, Eindhoven

The new piece, has been begotten by the same research that created the ICE piece for Berlin Transmediale and EPQ-B; a quest for a generative object, conceived to be hang on a wall and stand as a painting will changing slowly in unpredictable ways connected to his “inner law of evolution”.

Is composed using a selection pictures from ice formations on water, frost, crystals and snow, and a set of images of a female body covered with clay, taken between 2008 and 2009 in North european winters. The photos are expression of a ongoing research on the colors and geometries that are generated by states of water, in particular, for this one, by the solid: ice, snow, crystals, frost.

The triptych hangs on the wall to open up a vertical dimension in the space. Traditionally conceived, to help raise the eyes up. Is also a painting about the search for an archetype, a set of transformational rules that stands into the everyday visual mind scape to alter our perception of it. A slightly unsettling, dangerous idea of beauty that stands behind the image and the way it changes.

Concept and pictures by Federico Bonelli.
Algorithms design: Federico Bonelli, Robert Fischer, Maurizio Martinucci
Model for B and coreography of her movements Benedetta Mazzotti
Software : Robert Fischer
Produced by SUb multimedia re_search lab and Philips Research

Many thanks to: Inés Sauer, Victor Nieuwenhuis, Gisle Fröisland and Piksel festival Bergen

It is based on a modified EPQ-JS# algorithm and rendering strategy, the same used for the multi-screen installation Junglescape that shows in Philips Shoplab. It runs in full HD1080i resolution on an Aurea screen, covered with a handmade platan wood frame and hanged in portrait mode.

I have been talking with public and visitors for two days and had very interesting feedback comments. The piece has been received wonderfully as the protoquadro project. It gets easier to explain it as a pictorial artistic technique than in 2004, and visitors often seated on the couches in front of the piece to take their time to look at it in it’s changing behaviour.
Many questions regarded the possibility of housing a protoquadro home as a painting.

Concept and photos for JS#A protoquadro are by F. Bonelli:
thanks to Rob for the stand-alone version of EPQ engine on wich the painting is running and the all SUb crew. Special thanks to Arianna de Angelis for her mysterious and dynamic image and to V. Nieuwenhuis for inspiration and sharing with me his tricks-of-the-trade.

Friday the 30th of November, in Eindhoven, the first Enhanced Protoquadro (EPQ) Junglescape has been presented to a selected audience.

Click here to view the embedded video.
d/l the clip for | desktop (20.2 MB) | ipod (16.7 MB)| mobile 3gpp (1.4 MB) |

For the occasion the premises guested 6 pieces from our past and one piece from our future. In the space of the experience lab, open for once for all guests was possible to see:

NG#-UC – “Unlikely Canvases”, in the full resolution version that has been shown in Washington DC in september, on a plasma philips screen hang in the sleeping room

NG#-SLF – “The Secret Life of Flowers”, in various incarnations: in two mirrors and in a frame in the living room

SATOR – “Magic Squares”, that was working horizontally in a table top and dialoguing mutely with his “counter altar” piece, a 3×3 combinatorial magic square in a small window in the kitchen

NG#-Dummies, also in a frame computer, changing very slowly in the shop himself, remixing shop windows dummies in ever changing combinations

AI – A video installation, spanning over the two plasma screen in the entrance lobby, with it’s strict aesthetics of perpetual combinations

EPQ-Aut – “Autumn”, A preview of a work in progress centered on the colors and shapes of autumn and their modification property on dreams, that was exposed on 3 screens in the main room of the homelab

Last but not least EPQ-JUNGLESCAPE, blossoming in full interactive version with the many people intervened to the presentation from the shopwindow itself.

The event was introduced by a speech of Emile Aarts, Vice President and Scientific Program Director at Philips Research, that recalled the role of “visionary statements” and art in research.

A brief presentation from Everts Van Loenen, Principal Scientist in the Media Interaction Group of the Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven followed.

Federico Bonelli’s short speech about the role of modernism in the development of their painting ideas, in particular starting from the sentence of Boccioni that opens also this website under the term of “concetto formale”. He followed with a small glimpse of future ideas to be researched with the new rendering platform behind EPQ.

To close the brief introduction Maurizio Martinucci spoke about the paintings in the show and about the motivation to re_search.

Some of the guests followed Federico in a tour of the premises in which he demostrated the ability of the protoquadros to open up storytelling.

In the next days will be available more pictures and a short edit of the video material we shot.

For now we want to thank warmly all people at Philips Homelab for the welcome and the intelligent respect with they have helped us to set up the showcase.

The Symposium was part of the program of the Image Radio Festival.

The Auditorium of the Museum was decorated by the enhanced version of Unlikely Canvases, hosted into a 42″ Philips display hanged on the wall, that expressed with strength the concept of ambient aesthetics connected to the protoquadro. The film previewed with the audience in the museum will be on-line in the next days. It shows EPQ-Junglescape on the 4 windows of the Shop window installation in Homelab premises.

Invited speaker were Mirjam Struppek, George Fifield, Evert van Loenen and Federico Bonelli, moderated and introduced by Carmin Karasic.

A short clip documenting modes of interaction between passers by and the shopwindow installation at Philips Homelab showing Junglescape was shown to a attentive audience inside Evert van Loenen presentation. Many question followed in during the panel discussion and between panelers and guests in the following dinner.

The event was streamed live by citytv.nl

A interesting comment about the event has been published on the dutch newspaper NRC. YOu can find it in the press section or linked here
