Protoquadro is a painting technique conceived to use digital supports to produce objects that will stand into a space as paintings used to be.
These objects have some characters of a painting and some of a totally new class of objects, therefore the name, formed by the greek term "protos" (first) and the italian "quadro" (painting).

IFA in Berlin Messe claims to be the biggest fair type event for Consumer Electronics and Home Appliances in the world.
And in this occasion the ICE series Triptych called “B” will be shown in the premises, introduced by a first outing on www.philips.com web site. In the site you can also d/l an interview with Federico Bonelli.

Is for us a nice thing moreover because we expect more people to be able to see our work and enjoy it.
Is the occasion to thanks all minds and harts behind the project “protoquadro”, in particular Amy Jackson, the brilliant artist that inspired with her gorgeous pictures the first protoquadro “Unlikely Canvases” in 2003.
A generative object, conceived to be hang on a wall and stand as a painting will and changing slowly in unpredictable ways.
B is composed using a selection pictures from ice formations on water, frost, crystals and snow and a set of images of a naked female body covered with clay, taken by the author.
ICE-B is a futurist painting about the search for an archetype.

For the occasion the premises guested 6 pieces from our past and one piece from our future. In the space of the experience lab, open for once for all guests was possible to see:
NG#-UC – “Unlikely Canvases”, in the full resolution version that has been shown in Washington DC in september, on a plasma philips screen hang in the sleeping room
NG#-SLF – “The Secret Life of Flowers”, in various incarnations: in two mirrors and in a frame in the living room
SATOR – “Magic Squares”, that was working horizontally in a table top and dialoguing mutely with his “counter altar” piece, a 3×3 combinatorial magic square in a small window in the kitchen
NG#-Dummies, also in a frame computer, changing very slowly in the shop himself, remixing shop windows dummies in ever changing combinations
AI – A video installation, spanning over the two plasma screen in the entrance lobby, with it’s strict aesthetics of perpetual combinations
EPQ-Aut – “Autumn”, A preview of a work in progress centered on the colors and shapes of autumn and their modification property on dreams, that was exposed on 3 screens in the main room of the homelab
Last but not least EPQ-JUNGLESCAPE, blossoming in full interactive version with the many people intervened to the presentation from the shopwindow itself.
The event was introduced by a speech of Emile Aarts, Vice President and Scientific Program Director at Philips Research, that recalled the role of “visionary statements” and art in research.
A brief presentation from Everts Van Loenen, Principal Scientist in the Media Interaction Group of the Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven followed.
Federico Bonelli’s short speech about the role of modernism in the development of their painting ideas, in particular starting from the sentence of Boccioni that opens also this website under the term of “concetto formale”. He followed with a small glimpse of future ideas to be researched with the new rendering platform behind EPQ.
To close the brief introduction Maurizio Martinucci spoke about the paintings in the show and about the motivation to re_search.
Some of the guests followed Federico in a tour of the premises in which he demostrated the ability of the protoquadros to open up storytelling.
In the next days will be available more pictures and a short edit of the video material we shot.
For now we want to thank warmly all people at Philips Homelab for the welcome and the intelligent respect with they have helped us to set up the showcase.
